Abbey heard the chaos before she saw it. The wounded practically tumbled down the mezzanine into New Albion. A trail of blood followed them.

“Liam!” Abbey cried, rushing toward the war torn crowds. “God, no… Liam!”

“Abbey!”

She saw him make his way past everyone to melt into her arms. “It was a trap,” he said to her, nearly out of breath. “We lost Ty.”

“What!”

“We lost him out there… he might be…”

“No, my God, no.” She looked beyond him at the mass of broken and battered people. “I’ve got to help them…”

“Go…” Liam said, ushering her to the crowds.

“This way!” Abbey called. She took hold of the first person that stumbled to her and threw their arm around her.

Grace and Malcolm carried Shaw with them, joining Abbey’s side. “Son of bitch knew we were coming!” she barked. “Shaw’s leg is a mess.”

“Get him to the medical bay,” Abbey replied. “Sam and I will help him.”

The crowd followed Abbey through the hallways and to the steps that led to the medical bays. Abbey spotted Jerry on the stairs, clinging to them as if hanging on for dear life.

His entire body trembled. “You’re not bringing the dead in here, are you?” His voice cracked.

“No one is dead here, Jerry,” Abbey said. “Please move out of the way. We have an emergency situation.”

Jerry crawled out of the way, and Abbey rushed up through the double doors. Adrenaline pumped through her. Her heart slammed against her chest. She was instantly back in her ER. It was as if she’d never left.

“Sam!” she yelled. “Multiple wounded. We need all the open beds we can get.”

“What in the hell…” Sam left his experiments to rush to Abbey’s aid.

Abbey jumped into action. She gathered all the antiseptic she could carry, along with bandages, blankets, and various first aid kits.

Grace and Malcolm lifted Shaw onto a bed. Abbey tended to everyone she could despite the overwhelming numbers. People sat on the floor, groaning, bleeding, consoling each other. She cleaned wounds, bandaged gashes, and tied tourniquets. She ran frantically from bed to bed, person to person, as Sam did the same.

Carlos appeared in the room, searching frantically. He went up to Abbey and mouthed: “I can help.”

“Thank you,” she said with excitement. “Anyone, check for bleeding, clean wounds, anything that you can handle.”

He nodded and started checking on people until he saw Owen also helping some of the others. Carlos ran up to him and tapped him on the back.

“Carlos!” Owen almost jumped when he saw him. “What are you doing here?”

“Helping,” Carlos signed.

“Me too.” Owen signed back.

The two of them stopped what they were doing and hugged. “Are you okay?” asked Carlos.

Owen nodded and mouthed: “I’m fine.”

Carlos brushed his hand over him and focused on his right arm. “No… you’re not. You’re burned.”

“Huh?” Owen looked at his own arm, noticed the edge of the shirt, frayed and blackened, sticking to his skin. “I was helping Tess…”

“Hold still.” Carlos grabbed some gauze, antiseptic and scissors. He cut the shirt away from Owen’s arm, it snagged against his flesh and Carlos shook his head.
